Tiny White Lights On My Christmas Tree
Origin story: In the Fall of 2018, I heard that every year many people are looking for new Christmas songs. I got inspired to see if I could write one. I decided to start with something I like (tiny white lights on a tree), and went from there. The initial idea was this — what if each little light is a reminder of one of my ancestors? The song evolved into showing gratitude for the people who came before me by continuing the traditions they taught me. And in doing so, I might find a place in the future lights of anyone who learned from me. It became a song about holiday decorations, family trees, and passing on traditions.
I'm not a great singer, but I liked how it came out. Then over the holiday weekend I collaborated with Sean Michael Hunt who's refinement of the music and lyrics helped make it even better. Thank you Sean, for your generous help in bringing this to life! We recorded the guitar version over a couple hours on Christmas Day so we could share. Enjoy, and Merry Christmas!

Tiny White Lights On My Christmas Tree
by Scott Moehring and Sean Michael Hunt
-----------
It’s getting dark early, a chill in the air
Put a log on the fire, brush the snow from my hair.
The tree’s on the stand, pine scent all around
I get out my ornaments, kept safe and sound
Each one's a memory, each one's unique
Twinkling by firelight, their stories they speak
But the ones I like best, on cold winter nights
Are the tree constellations, the tiny white lights
CHORUS
Tiny white lights, on my Christmas tree
Reminders of Christmases, long before me
A family tradition, passed down from before
not just decoration, it means something more
All that I have, I did not build myself
The legacy started with somebody else
A long line of fathers, generations of mothers
friends and young cousins, the sisters and brothers
I took what they gave me, did as I was shown
And over the years, I made them my own
When I hang the lights, so bright and so small
I think of those people, I think of them all
CHORUS
Tiny white lights, on my family tree
The people before me, those people like me
The twinkling reminders, that come once a year
I feel their presence, each time they appear
The people before me, most I never knew
They're my history, on their branches I grew
Back through the ages, too many to list
Without all those people, I wouldn’t exist
The fire is fading, but I still feel warm
Those lights will be with me, through dark and through storm
As my eyelids get heavy, I’m happy to be
One of those lights, on my family tree
CHORUS
Tiny white lights, on my Christmas tree
Glowing with memories, both lived and to be
I’ll keep the tradition, and after I’m gone
The next generation, their trees I’ll be on
