Play Every Day
As part of a job search process over the summer of 2019, I began examining my personal brand, assets, skills, and interests. The word "play" kept showing up, and had been a theme in my notebooks for many years. I just kept pushing it away as "really interesting to me, but not serious enough for a career".
Then I discovered "play research" being done by the Real Play Coalition (founded by IKEA, The Lego Foundation, Unilever, and National Geographic), the US Play Coalition, the National Institute for Play, and others. They were reporting on a play crisis, where kids and adults were playing less, with serious consequences for development, emotional health, innovation, community strength, and other important concerns. The science is clear, but it can be difficult to help people prioritize play in their busy lives. Some of the organizations have even struggled to get funding because no one would take the study of play seriously.
On 9/25/19, I had the idea of starting Play Every Day. It would be a nonprofit dedicated to promoting play and playfulness as essential for wellness and creativity in individuals, families, organizations, and communities. I have no idea where this might lead, but it seems really, really important, meaningful, and something I might be uniquely wired to do.
A Champion of Play. I like the sound of that.
Moehr to come...
