My Life's Fishing Hole (Stoney Lake)
ORIGIN: In 2019, I went to visit my aunt and uncle. I hadn't seen them in decades, but all the stars had lined up to reconnect. Every summer they spend many weeks at a place called Stoney Lake, and my uncle has been there every year of his life. It's a few hours north of Toronto, and an exceptionally beautiful natural treasure. When I was there, he told me a story of how every major decision in his life had been made while fishing out on that water.
On my long drive home, I wrote down some lyrics on an index card. I had also been listening to the entire Rush anthology in chronological order (40 years of music for a 14 hour drive), and one of their instrumental songs just resonated with me. It seemed to fit my rough lyrics really well, so I thought about using it instead of writing and recording original music. Plus, it's from a Canadian band (maybe THE Canadian band), so it's just another way it fit perfectly.
Two months later, I dug out the index card, found a great cover version of the song by Jake Schoenle, and finessed the lyrics to fit. Thanks Uncle John and Aunt Carolyn, for the warm reception, the tours, and all the stories. It was fantastic. I can see why Stoney has captivated you for all these years, and I hope you enjoy listening to this song.

My Life’s Fishing Hole (Stoney Lake)
By Scott Moehring, 2019
----------
Oh I’ve got a problem, the answer, don’t know
I need time to think, I know just where to go
Yes, it’s a Stoney problem, but the answer’s out there
On the lake, with my boat, and my rod, and fresh air
Dark water and granite, pines and blue sky
I throttle the engine, my spirits so high
I'm fishing for insight, fishing for thoughts
On my Stoney Lake, life's decisions are caught
I track the safe line, between islands I fly
I am home in the north, wave to those I pass by
At last I arrive at My Life’s Fishing Hole
I cast and I wait, and I feel whole
Fishing for clarity, fishing for thoughts
On my Stoney Lake, life's decisions are caught
Time, space, and solitude are my trusted bait
The big ones will bite, if only I wait...
I’ve reeled in some keepers on the lake all alone
Then it’s Red Right Returning, to find my way home
