PORTFOLIO
Graphic designI have a degree in Visual Communication Design from The Ohio State University. I was fortunate to study under some exceptional instructors, and for every project I still use the fundamental lessons they taught me - attention to detail in hierarchy, legibility, reproducibility, and craft.
I've worked in large corporate communication departments, small design firms, global ad agencies, and as a freelancer for small businesses. |
WritingI’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I’ve since moved beyond crayons, but putting interesting words on flat surfaces has been a common theme my whole life. Advertising, product naming, presentations, teaching, processes, stories, songs...
|
Product DesignDesigning flat things is fun, but building 3D things is even more fun. In high school I made a music cassette tape rewinder with a plastic Spirograph gear and an empty Bic pen shell. There was a drum set for an air band made out of foamcore. Then I made a modular wooden toy in a college product design class. Then Bleacher Bubbles seat warmers. Pinball lamps and coaster sets came next. Dozens and dozens of unique dimensional signs for two national retail chains. Making a physical object that people can use is a fascinating challenge for me.
|
PhotographyIt started with a little camera as a Christmas present from my parents. Then it was high school classes with Jack Summers, where I got a 35mm Minolta and learned darkroom techniques. In college it was on to cell animation and classes on film and developing chemistry. Then I started applying all those lessons to the digital world as Photoshop appeared. Photography has been a joy in my life for over 40 years.

IllustrationSometimes a pencil (or pen, paintbrush, pastel, paper, or even something that doesn't begin with "p") is still the best design tool.
|
UI designMy first attempt at UI design was in 1996, when I designed a radiant interface concept for accessing the tools in Photoshop. I enjoy thinking up new ways to interact with computers, and using the available tools in different ways to achieve better results.
|
Production artGreat ideas need great execution. Sometimes it's making sure the bleed, trim, and live areas are set up correctly for a magazine ad. Sometimes it's press checking a 800,000 piece catalog run in the middle of the night to ensure excellent color matching. Marking up retouching corrections for a 9-color pinball playfield. Creating pixel-perfect files for a website header. Testing a color scheme for contrast for colorblind users. Choosing a substrate based on cost, longevity, availability, and how well it will fold, tape, glue, hang, or print.
There's just a certain satisfaction when a final piece shows up, and it looks exactly like it was designed to look. |
Production ManagerFor years my identity was "every sign, every store". I was responsible for prototyping, tracking, and managing the printing and on-time delivery of about 3,000 custom signs a year (totaling 8,000,000 pieces packed in 50,000 boxes). I handled all vendor communications, daily interactions with internal Marketing, Operations, and Finance teams, POs, and monthly invoice reconciliation. I saved the company many millions of dollars by finding significant cost reductions every year. These included rebate programs, efficient printing and packing techniques, a $300,000 UPS fee error, and $2.1 million by changing a sign construction which eliminated oversized shipping charges without reducing the sign's visible marketing surface area.

Clarity SpecialistI love helping people think through tricky problems. It's probably my favorite thing to do. You could call me a Clarity Consultant. Generative Guide. Idea Initiator. Strategy Steerer. Creativity Coach. Lateral-thinking Liaison. Problem-solving Pro. A Stumped Grinder! Ouch, maybe not that last one. :)
I develop, collect and test thinking tools because they fascinate me. I can't get enough of that feeling of an "aha moment", especially when I've helped someone else find an idea or insight for their problem. I think it can be very difficult to think in new ways if you don't think you're creative, or if you are really close to a problem. My experience has shown these tools can help anyone approach a problem differently, and I love having them at the ready for when someone needs my help. |
